Google Nexus Screen Separation Fix

----------UPDATED----------

Boy was I excited to get my Nexus 7 last week, so much hype, so much demand! And it did not disappoint! Well... not too much.

Turns out ASUS dropped the ball a bit on the Nexus 7 when the demand ramped up. A lot of people have been having a so called "screen separation issue" where the left side of the glass sticks up a bit and squishes in when pushed.

Left side of the screen sticks up as shown

After searching through some message boards I found various fixes - tightening up the screws, shimming down the foam on the back, removing it completely, nothing really seemed to work (although I would recommend making sure all the screws are tight)...

What seems to be happening here is the original glue or epoxy used to hold the screen down to the case didn't bond completely before the units were shipped out (probably due to the rushed production). A guy on a forum used a light clamp to hold the screen down while he played the Transformers movie - idea being, the movie would heat up the tablet enough for the glue to reflow, then bond again.

I tried doing this, but to my dismay, the unit barely seemed to heat up halfway through the movie! I even set it on top of my computer, which normally runs quite hot, but still nothing. The Nexus 7 stayed pretty cool - which I guess is a good thing! Anyways, not convinced that the glue would of stuck, I decided to leave the clamp on for 24 hours. Guess what? It worked. It's been over two days now and the screen is still completely flush with the bezel and there is no squeek!

Another method that is even easier is to run the device hot for a bit (play your favourite graphic-intensive game) and then put a few textbooks on top over night.

Stack some books on top, leave it over night, and your good!

So if you want to save yourself and Google some time by not doing an RMA, try this fix! Worse comes to worse you can still return it, the gentle clamp won't hurt it and there's no way for ASUS to tell you even did anything.

All in all, it's a great little tablet and I love it. Kinda disappointed that ASUS dropped the bomb on manufacturing, but hey, for the price we're paying, it's still more than worth it. Let's just hope they learn their lesson for manufacturing.

Did this fix work? Did you try something else? Leave a comment and start a discussion!

Good luck!

    1. Good luck! Hope it works for you! You might try heating it up in the beginning by playing some movies or running a bunch of apps at once.

  3. Why would you do this instead of returning it for a replacement? This is absolutely unacceptable on a flagship device costing multi hundreds of dollars.

  4. Because some people don't want to deal with the hassle. And it was only $200 - I didn't expect super quality in the first place seeing as they are barely making a profit off the 8gb version. If this is the only thing wrong, and you can fix it overnight, why waste everyone's time and money?

Yes I agree it shouldn't of happened on a flagship model, and ASUS did definitely drop the bomb on the manufacturing, but I'm not going to overly penalize them for it. It was a simple and easy fix, and it was less hassle for me than to return it.

  5. It shouldn't be a hassle to get a replacement; the fact that it's a hassle is another fault of ASUS.

  6. Going to the ups store is too much hassle for the lazy convenience set.

  7. What kind of clamp is it you mention?

You just have something hold the screen down tight while playing the movie for 24 hours?

    1. Pile of books works the best - people have used binder clips and gentle wood clamps or those adjustable ones. You really don't need much pressure, which is why a pile of books is probably the safest bet.

    2. Clamping for 16 hours now, playing 1080p movie whenever I'm there to restart it. Fingers crossed...

    3. I clamped for more than a day. It is a somewhat better, but far from perfect (the right edge of the screen)
